The Common Types of Network Cabling

There’s no denying that network cabling is an essential tool for any business, especially one that spends a lot of its time online. However, if you’re just getting into this area then it can be a bit confusing trying to distinguish between the different varieties that are available. That’s why we've put together this little list of the varying models.

Unshielded Twisted Pair Cables. There is a definite advantage to this variety of network cabling, simply because it’s probably the most inexpensive! If you’re looking for a good way to budget on a larger job, this is probably the right option for you.

It is worth considering, however, that these cables can be subject to noise interference, and also be on the slow side every now and then.

Shielded Pair Cables. These are similar to the above in that they follow a more economic price, meaning that they’re also a good candidate for those seeking the cheaper option.

Fortunately, they are less susceptible to interference than the unshielded model, meaning that they can offer a bit more quality without you having to pay through the nose.

Coaxial Cables. We’re moving slightly higher up the order here. Coaxial cables are certainly not low cost, but by sacrificing price you obtain increased electrical characteristics and a higher resistance to potential interference from other areas. Needless to say, this leads to a higher quality end results all round

Optical Fiber Cables. Without doubt the top of the line network cable, fiber optic lines are used by more or less all the top internet service providers for a reason. Top range performance, superb bandwith and a high rate of data transmission all make this variety a sound investment. The network equivalent of the Savile row suit
